Birth Center at O'Connor Hospital
Mother Baby unit
Our physicians, nurses and family-centered care team provide the expertise and warm environment needed for the entire childbirth experience. Our birth center offers 18 private postpartum maternity suites, which include a private bathroom, television, and a sleeper chair.
Our services include:
- 27/4 access to qualified, supportive nursing staff and providers
- Inpatient and outpatient newborn hearing assessments
- Universal screening for all infants for jaundice (condition caused by a buildup of bilirubin, a yellow chemical produced by the breakdown of red blood cells)
- Certified lactation specialists and onsite support
- Breastfeeding support groups
- Family-centered pediatric services
BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT
In addition to certified lactation specialists, staff in our Birth Center are trained to assist in breastfeeding, the use of breast pumps, hand expression and skin-to-skin bonding. This dedication has resulted in some of the highest breastfeeding rates in the Bay Area. We support the practice of rooming-in to allow mothers and babies to remain together 24 hours a day.
HIGH-RISK INFANT FOLLOW-UP (HRIF) CLINIC
Our care teams provide developmental support for babies from birth to age three who are designated as high risk due to prematurity, low birth weight or other conditions. We also provide early identification and referrals for children at risk for neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral delay.
